Today’s ONE THING: Good grief, is that someone washing your feet?!

  • John 13:6 (NKJV) Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”

The occasion when Jesus washed his disciple’s feet was one of the most awkward events that occurred in his relationship with them and is an extreme example of selfless service; I mean here is an example of God stooping to do the work of the lowest slave.  But then what would you expect from Someone willing to die for you?

Needless to say, the disciples were mortified when Jesus – their Lord and Leader – stopped what he was doing to perform this menial chore.  There they were so preoccupied with their own agenda, jockeying for position and with getting the biggest lamb chop that they didn’t even take the time to wash their own feet more less their friends and leader.

Peter’s incredulous rhetorical question was a good question to ask.  The question, “Lord, are You washing my feet?” is pregnant with opportunities to learn and grow.  Maybe it’s a question that we should ask on a regular basis ourselves.

For example, in your own home, are there people faithfully serving you?  How long has it been since you said, “thank you” to them?  What about work and school?  The public places you frequent?

Bottom line, if heartfelt “thank you’s” are not frequently coming from your lips then at best it is a sign that you are way to occupied with yourself and at worst it is a sign of serious character defects.  It’s time to start remedying that today.

Oh God, stir up an attitude of gratitude in our hearts today!
