Today’s ONE THING: Maybe it’s time to go back

  • John 10:40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed.

Sometimes it is good to go back to special places.  Sonja and I have a few special places that we go back to on a regular basis.  For example, we usually go to Myrtle Beach for a couple of days each year for that is where we had honeymoon.  Another place that we like to go to is Sapphire Valley, NC because that is where we took an annual family vacation with our children for many years.    Both of these places bring comfort and joy to us because they remind us special seasons and events in our lives.

That is what Jesus did in today’s verse.  He got away from all it for a little while and went back to where it all started; back to the place where he was baptized and where he was first commissioned and proclaimed as the Christ (Messiah).

Could it have been that Jesus just needed to go back and reassure himself that he was doing the right thing?  I know there have been times like that in my life.  I remember one such occasion when I went back to the church, where as an eight year old, I first committed my life to Christ.  I knelt at the very spot that I made that commitment.  It brought me comfort and strengthened my resolved.

What about you?  Perhaps you’ve strayed away from the faith of an earlier time in your life.  Perhaps you’ve become distracted by all the busyness and complexity of life and you’ve lost your way with God or with other important relationships in your life.  Why not go back – literally or at least in your mind – to that special place where you first started your journey and remember why you did it.  Yes, sometimes we just need to go back and remember the specials times and rediscover our purpose and place in life.
