Today’s ONE THING: Keep it Simple

  • John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

When David Livingstone, the great missionary to Africa, volunteered as a missionary with the London Missionary Society, they asked him where he wanted to go.  He replied, “Anywhere, as long as it is forward.”

I think David Livingstone had learned the message of John 3:36 – keep it simple!

It is amazing how complicated we make our Christian faith.  Yet the message of the Gospel is that one thing and only one thing determines if we have everlasting life; and that one thing is whether or not we believe in Jesus Christ.

Remember the bank Wachovia?  I’ll never forget the morning I watched the stock of Wachovia literally erode away in a few hours from several dollars per share to just pennies per share.  The reason this was meaningful to me was I had a close friend that had spent many years working for that bank and much of their retirement was tied in up Wachovia’s stock.   As I sat there that morning, I grieved as I watched their hopes for the future erode away to nothing.

How did that happen?  Wachovia was one of the largest banks in the nation.  It was in no worst condition than the other banks.  So why is there no longer a Wachovia bank?  The answer is simple: people stopped believing in Wachovia.  Fear gripped the hearts of the depositors and investors and a classic “run on the bank” occurred.

The same thing can happen to your peace and security in life.  Your ability to experience true life is no stronger than your belief in Jesus Christ.

There is nothing more important today than keeping your belief in Jesus strong.  Keep it simple, make knowing Jesus the paramount passionate pursuit of your life – everything else will fall into place.
