John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
The word decrease is not a popular word in our culture; ask congress about this when it comes to the national debt! Ask anyone on a weight-loss program; America talks a good talk but we continue to get heavier as a nation.
We are much more into increase than decrease.
That is why John the Baptist’s statement today is so startling. “He must increase, but I must decrease” is so out of step with how the average person thinks. I mean, who wants to start the week off making it their goal to figure out how to decrease their influence and prosperity in order that someone else can increase and prosper.
Yet for the devoted follower of Jesus Christ that is the agenda. Starting today the goal for the rest of our lives is to figure out how we can decrease and Jesus increase. Our goal in life must be to make life less and less about us and more and more about Him.
And here’s the irony – this is the most sure way for us experience abundant life…if only we’d believe this.
Was John crazy for thinking like this? Absolutely not! I dare you to give it a try.
