Please do not take offense, but I’d rather be reading a book right now. Let me explain…
Most mornings I read a book that is so difficult that I only read five pages a day. It is 1132 pages and is very technical. I struggle with it, fuss at it, debate it, and fill the margins with notes, complaints and agreements. Is this book stimulating? Most certainly. It is also inspiring and helpful and I’d say it is even fun to read; however, it is also “work”. That book is not the book I’d rather be reading this evening.
I could go on and bore you with the many commentaries, books and journals that I am required read in order to do my job. But again, that is not what I’m talking about.
What I’m talking about this evening is reading for fun. Right now I am in the middle of a book that is so exciting that I’d like to call life off for a little while and just sit down and read it straight through – cover to cover.
I guess having grown up with no television in my home, I’ve never really understood people’s preference for television. I have a few programs that I enjoy watching from time to time, but television is so “flat” – and I not talking about the screen. Watching television is so one-dimensional, what you see is what you get. However, a good book picks you up and takes you away. You enter into the lives, thoughts and world of the characters. The only thing that limits you is you and the author’s imagination.
If you are one of those people who say, “I’m not a reader.” I assure you it is only because you haven’t run across a book that captures you. Make that a quest, find a book that grips you and enjoy yourself.
Well, I’d love to discuss this more with you but…you guessed it…I’ve got a book calling for me; I’m out here, heading from the front porch and a good rocker and a good book and a cool pleasant evening. Now that’s life…
