Nassim Nicholas Taleb in his best-seller: Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in the Markets and in Life wrote one of the most haunting statements ever. He wrote, “It does not matter how frequently something succeeds if failure is too costly to bear.”
Most people never stop to think about this. We saw this during the housing bubble as people leveraged their homes and lives to the max “flipping real estate.” It worked great for a season but oh when the bubble burst.
I see far too many parents making this same mistake. Week after week, they’re out there pouring themselves into their work, making money, buying things, going places but lurking in that little angel that they barely see each day is lurking a teenager and young adult who will one day emerge and understand what their parents did to them. (Listen to Harry Chapin’s “Cat’s in the Cradle”.)
We do this with our bodies, our faith, our friendships, our marriages and in so many other areas.
We don’t like to think about it, but today’s ONE THING is: Think Worst-case scenario.
Every so often it’s important to stop and ask yourself, what is the worst thing that could happen if I continue living like I’m living. It may be worth the risk to keep going like you’re going, but at least don’t let calamity come upon you unaware and unprepared.
37 But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39 and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.
Matthew 24:37-39 (NKJV)
