Today’s ONE THING: “Do NOT live a balanced life.”

Somewhere along the way many people have confused the Christian virtue of temperance with living a balanced life (as if “being balanced” is a good thing).  Temperance (moderation) is, indeed good whether it is eating ice cream or earning money.  In contrast, “being balanced” is not.  I mean how to do you eat ice cream in a “balanced” way – eat a little of all available flavors?  How can you be “balanced” earning money – try to earn a little of every currency or maybe, try to earn the same amount every day?

If Noah had tried to live a balanced life, he would have never gotten the Ark built before the flood came.  If John the Baptist had tried to preach a balanced message, he would have never gotten the people prepared for the arrival of Jesus.  Matter of fact, if Jesus had tried to live a balanced life he would have been spread so thin that he’d never made it to Calvary.

If Hank Aaron had tried to be balanced in his hitting he would have never broke the Babe’s homerun record (Career sacrifice bunts – 21 / Career home runs – 755).  If NASA had tried to be balanced, they would have never put a man on the moon.  If Paula Dean had tried to be a balanced cook, we’d have never heard of her (Can you say butter and fried?).

What I’m talking about is focus.  All things are not equal, if you goal is to be balanced and fair with your time, resources and energy you are going to waste your life.  If your idea of being balanced is to be open to every idea and opinion then you are going to be so open-minded that your brain is going to fall out.

Wise up!  Life is not fair and neither should you be.  The next time someone says of you, “You are unbalanced.”  Smile and say, “Thank you.”
