Today is an example of the original meaning of the word “holiday”. Originally holiday meant “holy day”, and Memorial Day is truly a holy day in which we pause to remember those whose lives were definitely not defined by “punching a clock”.
While not all of us are involved in full-time service to our country, all of us are involved in full-time service to something or someone. In other words, in some area(s) we are “on salary.”
All across our land offices and shops are closed today; closed, that is, to people who punch a clock. Now please don’t get me wrong – there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a job that pays by the hour. However, what I want you to focus on today are those areas in your life that you are “on” 24/7. Those are the areas that will probably most closely align with your purpose and vocation in life…they are the things that “matter”.
For example, even if your job gave you a holiday today, what are those things that were so compelling that you were involved in them today anyway? Chances are those are the things that are going to matter the day after you turn in your keys where you currently work. Remember, “salaried employees” don’t get holidays; there are just some jobs so important that somebody has to be responsible for them at all times. Knowing those 24/7 areas in your life is extremely important, for it is there that your passion, priorities and resources must go if you hope to leverage the days God has given you here on earth to the max.
