I think it is good to think seriously about your stewardship of money at least weekly. Last week I challenged you to know your “Freedom number” (Review April 20th blog). Today the ONE THING is: Live by the 10-10-80 rule (minimally).
The 10-10-80 principle works this way:
- You pay God by giving Him 10% of all income – before taxes and clearly marked as tithes. You do this to state that you are giving up all rights to God’s money by not designating it where you think it ought to go. When your company pays you they don’t tell you how to spend your check, why would you try to do that to God?
- You pay yourself by saving 10% of all income – before taxes. I’m not talking about saving for a vacation or a new entertainment center or car; I’m talking about socking away 10% of your income in a long-term investment plan like a mutual fund and forgetting about it.
- You live off the 80%. If you will do this pay period after pay period you will discover that you are living under the blessings of God, financing God’s wonderful future plans for your life and living a guilt free and hope filled today.
Now don’t just say, “That’s a great idea.” Do it! Sharpen your pencil and cut your spending until the numbers work.
You’re thank me someday. However, I will expect more than a “thank you”, there’s got to at least be a steak included 🙂
