Saying “Good-bye” to the staff and children at Canaan House was hard and that was a good thing.   When it is hard to say good-bye that means that you have made enough deposits in the relationship that it has value to you.  It also means that you realize the shortness of life and that the next “hello” is not a given.

Patricia Macias (Age 12, DOB: April 18)

I’ve thought about “hard good-byes” a lot since the day we said good-bye to the kids and staff the in Panama.  I’ve realized that we need more “hard good-byes” in our lives.   Life is too short and uncertain to allow ourselves to fill our lives with shallow friendships and acquaintances.  I want us to spend our lives investing in people so much that every time we have to say good-bye there is a little bit of sadness.  I want us to value our loved ones and friends so much that we never rush out the door with a quick and easy “good-bye”; I want there to be a pause and a little catch in our throat…because we value that loved-one so much and because we know that the next “hello” is not guarantee.

Bottom line, a little sadness with each good-bye is not a bad thing.

times.  And they kissed one another; and they wept together, but David more so.
