Ponderings from Panama

Sunday, August 21, 2011

Sunday mornings in Panama can be a little hectic when I take a group of preachers.  I always arrange for them to have a chance to preach in one of the churches in the area and that means that everyone is on a little different schedule.  So all Sunday morning I’m seeing the pastors off and meeting the translators and drivers from the different churches…did I say it was hectic?

Finally, it was my turn.  My driver arrived and it was time for Sonja, Stacy Finley and me to load up and head out to “Loma Bonita” (Pretty Hill) Church of God.

Sonja, Stacy and me with Pastor and Mrs. Wong

Hurriedly, I stepped into my bedroom to pick up my bible, passport, and wallet and then I reached for my watch…I stopped and just looked at my watch a moment.  I asked myself, “Why would I want to bring a watch to church?”  I thought, “What did I have to do today that would be more important?”

So for probably the first time in my adult life, I went to church without a watch, and guess what…I survived.  Not only did I survive, I didn’t even need my watch.

I think there is an important lesson to be learned here for all of us.  Why take your watch to church?  After all, what are you going to do next Sunday that is more important than worshiping and serving God at his house?

Matter of fact, what would happen if you put your watch away today?  Throughout this day there will be a few events that should not be measured in terms of seconds, minutes and hours but rather in light of eternity…don’t miss them by looking at the clock!

Unhurriedly,

  1. I so agree with you. We are going to church to hear the word of God, and to praise and worship him. What if God wore a watch and we had only an hour, day, week or a year to accept Jesus as our Savior then God say’s well times up, no more can be accepted into the kingdom.
Well I bet alot of us would think differently about wearing a watch to church and timing the Pastor.
